Silverlight is a framework for writing and running plugins or other applications with features similar to flash. Most web browsers can access the run time environment of Silverlight as plugins. Early versions of Silverlight focused on streaming media, however, recent versions provide support to multimedia, animation and graphics. This gives developers support for different languages and development tools. It is also an application development platform for windows phone 7
Silverlight is an amalgamation of various different technologies and hence it allows you to choose your programming language and your tools. Silverlight will integrate with your existing java script and .net code which you have already created.
Silverlight targets adobe flash and also gives a run for its money to sun microsystems javaFX.
Currently there are 2 major versions of Silverlight:
Silverlight 1.0 and Silverlight 2.0( previously referred to as version 1.1).
